Police and Fisheries officers have arrested three Vietnamese ‘blue boats’ (fishing boats) over the weekend for alleged illegal fishing within Solomon Islands waters.

The arrests were made late evening Sunday 26th March 2017 at the Indispensable Reef 50 kilometers south of Rennell Island, Renbel Province.

A total 43 crew members have been detained by Police for further dealings.

The arrests come when Police received report from Communities in Makira coast collaborated other intelligence received by RSIPF and Forum Fisheries Agency.

There were two Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) Patrol Boats, RSIPV Auki and RSIPV LATA involved in the successful operation conducted over the weekend.

It was alleged that there were four vessels spotted at the indispensable Reef by Police Patrols and only three boats were apprehended. The fourth boat was unable to be apprehended due to poor visibility and distance.

The RSIPF is currently escorting the crews and three boats back to Honiara where further investigations will be carried out by fisheries officers and police.

RSIPF is appealing to members of the public and coastal communities who may have information or sightings of suspicious vessels to call the 999 emergency line or 23666 to pass on the information.
