Compliance Officers from the Ministry of Fisheries were also part of the Operation Kurukuru which concluded yesterday.
Two officers from the Ministry of Fisheries were attached to the Regional Fisheries Surveillance Centre at FFA during the operations where they monitored the activities of the fishing vessels as part of their training.
‘Operation Kurukuru’ was conducted by the Forum Fisheries Agencies (FFA) in Honiara and it involved the use of the Police Patrol boats. The 10 days operation targeted Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in our EEZ.
During the patrol, Police Maritime officers boarded 13 foreign fishing vessels and one yacht. Another two sightings were made but officers were not able to board the vessels because of bad weather.
